Go bargain hunting more often - it's much easier to get into short conversations at flea markets than at the supermarket!
At flea markets, people like to ‘schnacken’, as the northern Germans like to say. People chat easily and casually, with a bit of humour and without it having to be about anything in particular.
Flea markets take place all over Germany at weekends, especially in the warmer months. From early in the morning, private sellers who have really ‘ausgemistet’ their homes, i.e. thrown out everything they no longer need, meet bargain hunters. It's relaxed and direct.
You can really try out your German here, negotiate and haggle a little. It's easy to make contact here, because the sellers don't want to take any of their things back home and are happy to engage in short conversations.
